Statement from Chair of Board

Dear Ministry Colleague:

More than five years ago, I decided to regularly and informally convene a group of Black Church clergy leaders to discuss today’s societal challenges and consider how we might play a role in addressing them. The Black Church Center for Justice & Equality was born out of this collection of clergy leaders, focused on addressing prevailing social issues through action congruent with their expressions of faith.

Today, the BCC exists to reaffirm the social justice tradition of the Black Church by providing a platform for progressive theological debate, public policy advocacy and public engagement that will amplify the voices of progressive African-American faith leaders in our network.

I am writing to extend a personal invitation to you to become a member of the Black Church Center for Justice and Equality. Our work is to strengthen the voices of leaders like you, support them in the social justice advocacy they wish to do in their communities, and connect that work to similar efforts on the national level.

Our membership process is simple and offers tremendous benefits. To become a member of the Black Church Center for Justice & Equality:

  1. Review the Black Church Center’s “How We Help” and ‘Statement of Values’ sections attached to this correspondence to find out how the BCC serves the faith community.
  2. Affirm the ‘Statement of Values’ and provide your contact information HERE.

In the next few weeks, the BCC will begin efforts to connect with leaders via phone to assess interest in joining our clergy network. I look forward to productive conversations and partnership with you as the Black Church Center endeavors to revive the social justice ministry of the African American church and do the work of Christ: “to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, and to set the oppressed

free (Luke 4:18).”

In Christ’s Service,

Delman Coates
